Synopsis
Whether you are building sets from scratch or embellishing a practical location, art direction is an important part of high production values. Looking good on film does not have to break the bank.
What shows behind the actors can be critical to good storytelling. In some cases part of the set can be an actor itself such as the HAL 9000 in 2001: A Space Odyssey or the hardware that brings Samantha to life in HER. Sci-fi epics and period pieces can be challenging.
Learn by example as veteran art director Jeff Van Gonka shows us how he developed some of his most interesting projects.
